Description

A super old Groves brass back tenon saw.

This saw is fitted with a Beech handle with a medallion marked ‘Established 1770’. The handle also has a fragile red paper ring around the medallion which originally had advertising on, you can still make out a few letters – up until this example we were unaware these saws had this.

The black paper on the handle is also very fragile with a piece of the black paper quite loose – I am guessing this probably also had advertising on it, possibly of the original merchant selling the saw.

The brass spine is marked ‘USE’, ‘Groves and Sons, Sheffield’ and ‘Silver Steel, Elastic Spring Temper, Warranted’.

We believe this saw probably dates to the 1880’s.

You would be hard pushed to find a better example.

TPI: 12

Blade length: 12″

Condition: blade is straight, all teeth present, probably would benefit from a sharpen, a couple of patches of light/minor pitting/black staining, the handles spurs have a couple of small nibbles, please see photos for condition.
